American national blood levels low!
My ex-roommate works for the Red Cross and asked me to share this.
Quote:
Apparently the blood supply Nation-wide has gotten low enough that our National office has asked all of the CEOs to ask their employees to ask their friends and family to donate if they can. So here's my blurb.
+ Anyone who is 17yrs old or older and weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood if they do not currently have any major health conditions such as AIDS and certain types of cancer.
+ Around 97% of the US population will need blood at some point in their lives, but only 5% of people who are eligible, donate blood. No wonder we are always having blood shortages!
+ A donation is for a worthy cause, and you can go home knowing you did something good to help others.
+ Hospital patients everywhere are in need of blood.
- Every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood, and a single blood donation could save up to 3 lives.
- But when the blood supply starts to get low, hospitals have to ration blood and non-emergency surgies and treatments may have to be postponed until more blood is available.
+ Donating blood is easy. The whole process takes about an hour (so you could literally save a life on your lunch break!), but the actual donation itself only takes around 10-15 minutes.
+ Afraid of needles? Don't worry. The needle insertion only feels like a pinch, and most people feel no discomfort during the rest of the donation.
+ What to expect: When you arrive at a Red Cross blood donation site, you will be asked to read some FDA-regulated information on blood donations.
-Then a staff member will ask you some questions to verify that you qualify to donate blood.
-A staff member will test your iron level and blood pressure to make sure it is at a good level for a donation. Then is the actual donation itself.
-After donating, you will be shown to the canteen where you are encouraged to rest for a few minutes and eat free snacks and drinks to give your body energy to replenish the pint of blood you donated.
- Dont exercise or do anything streneous after doanting blood.
+ How to prepare for a donation: Limit your caffiene intake for a few days prior to your donation if you tend to have low iron, because caffiene blocks the absorption of iron into the blood.
- Drink plenty of liquid before and after your doantion (preferrably water).
- Eat a good meal within 4 hours before your donation.
- Do not exercise or do anything streneous after your donation for the rest of that day.
+ You can donate blood once every 56 days- thats up to 6 times a year!
+ You can find the donation site nearest you by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. Select locations have a few drives set up at www.givelife.org where you can actually schedule your own appointment.
And if you already donate regularly, thank you for your support.

So if you're in the US, please donate!

Well, I'm in Canada and I'm under 17.
I'd help, but I don't think that I would be allowed to? It's always a great feeling when you're able to save someone else's life.
I hope this donation process goes through well.
